23 absence of the night

i caught the sun from between the trees
a quiet calm before the absence of the night

and I watch you escape from between my knitted fingers

you are like a brilliant hope waiting to spark
but evasive, unborn
a gentle word that the tongue forgets
the heart cannot return to nostalgia

i breathe shallow and hushed
the wide doe eyes on the back of your head will spy me
leave and leap and bound
an apparition of all my love.
